Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger

FRHE is able to design and supply Plate & Shell Heat Exchangers for various industrial heating, cooling, condensation and heat recovery applications.

The Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger combines the high heat transfer efficiency of plate heat exchanger technology with the strength and pressure containment of a conventional pressure shell. The heat transfer surface consists of formed plates which are welded together to create a compact plate pack. The complete plate pack is then enclosed within a cylindrical shell to form two separate flow paths for the hot and cold fluids.

Unlike a conventional gasketed plate heat exchanger, the plate pack is fully welded and does not rely on gaskets between the heat transfer plates. This makes the Plate & Shell design particularly suitable for applications involving higher operating pressures, higher temperatures or process fluids where conventional gasket materials may not be suitable. This basic construction is well established within commercial Plate & Shell technology.

The corrugated plate geometry creates turbulent flow through the heat exchanger which provides efficient heat transfer within a relatively compact surface area. As a result, Plate & Shell Heat Exchangers can provide a smaller footprint compared with conventional shell and tube heat exchangers for suitable applications.

The design is particularly useful where available installation space is limited or where a close temperature approach and good heat recovery performance are required.

Characteristics of our Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger include:

  • Compact heat transfer design
  • Fully welded plate pack construction
  • No gaskets between the heat transfer plates
  • High thermal efficiency
  • Suitable for higher pressure and temperature duties
  • Close temperature approach capability
  • Smaller footprint compared with conventional shell and tube designs for suitable duties
  • Good resistance to thermal cycling
  • Suitable for liquid, gas and phase change applications
  • Horizontal or vertical installation depending on process requirements
  • Single-pass or multi-pass arrangements where required
  • Custom nozzle orientation to suit site piping
  • Design based on individual process duty and operating conditions

Fully welded Plate & Shell designs are commonly applied where compact construction, mechanical strength and higher operating pressure capability are required.
